Conthey

Conthey (German Gundis ) is a municipality and the capital of the district of the Canton of Valais (French: Valais ) in Switzerland.

Geography

The municipality extends from Tsanfleuron glacier on the border with the Canton of Vaud down to the banks of the Rhone, in excess of 3,000 m above sea level. M. to 460 m above sea level. M. History

In the Middle Ages Conthey belonged to the Duchy of Savoy, while the neighboring towns of Sion (French immersion) and Savièse were the property of the Bishop of Sion. This led to numerous conflicts.

Today Conthey is known primarily as a regional shopping center, and - following Satigny GE, Chamoson VS and customs - as the fourth- largest wine-growing municipality in Switzerland. Conthey enjoys, like other areas in the Valais Rhône Valley, a mild climate, with below average rainfall.

The municipality also includes the Lac de Derborance and the Bassin de Godey.
