Cosmoledo

Cosmoledo is an atoll in the Indian Ocean. It belongs to the Aldabra Group, the Seychelles is one of the Outer Islands. It lies about 150 km east of Aldabra Atoll. Approximately 38 km south-southeast of Cosmoledo Atoll is the Astove Island.

Geography

Cosmoledo is about 14.5 km long and approximately 11.5 kilometers wide. The land area of the atoll is a total of only 5.2 square kilometers, the area of ​​the lagoon, however, about 145 km ². The atoll consists of a total of 16, the fringing reef lying islets ( cays ), of which Menai are in the west with 2.3 km ² and Grande Ile in the southeast with 1.6 km ² the largest.

Fauna

Cosmoledo is an important breeding area for seabirds. So here always find the largest colonies of all three occurring in the Seychelles booby species. The colony of red-footed boobies is even the largest of the Indian Ocean. Bindenfregattvögel, Arielfregattvögel as well as numerous species such as the Sooty Terns addition come before. Situated on Grande Ile also breed red-tailed tropic birds that are usually found only on Aldabra in the Seychelles.
