Cueva del Viento

The Cueva del Viento (translated: " Cave of the Winds " ) is a cave near Icod de los Vinos in the north of Tenerife. After a series of caves in Hawaii it is one of the longest lava tubes in the world and stands as the longest lava tube of the African continent and the European Union.

The cave system has a known length of approximately 17 kilometers on three levels. The oldest parts of the cave were created about 27,000 years ago during the eruption of the Pico Viejo. In the cave live 190 species, 15 species were found in this cave for the first time, such as the ground beetle Wolltinerfia martini and Wolltinerfia tenerifae. This cave is also rich in finds of fossils, such as the giant rat Canariomys bravoi.

A small part of the cave is about 180 meters to visit. There is also an information center from which to boot from the cave tours.
