Cyro Baptista

Cyro Baptista ( born December 23, 1950 in São Paulo) is a Brazilian Jazzperkussionist.

Baptista came in 1980 in the United States and settled in New York. He has performed with Paquito D' Rivera and worked together since the mid- 1980s and in the 1990s with John Zorn. Other partners during this time were Laurie Anderson and Herbie Mann. As a sideman he worked with the Brazilian singer Marisa Monte and Caetano Veloso and Tom Ze with. During the 1990s, Baptista came on several occasions with the jazz singers Cassandra Wilson and Holly Cole. He worked on five Grammy-winning albums: Yo- Yo Mas Obrigado Brazil, Cassandra Wilson Blue Light Til Dawn, The Chieftains ' Santiago, Ivan Lins ' A Love Affair, and Herbie Hancock's Gershwin 's World.

In 1997, he released his first album as a leader, Vira Loucos, on which he played his own arrangements of compositions by Heitor Villa- Lobos. In 2002 he founded the percussion ensemble Beat the Donkey, with whom he released several albums.
