D'Entrecasteaux Islands

The D' Entrecasteaux Islands are located in the Salomonensee, east of New Guinea, and are part of the Milne Bay Province of the Pacific state of Papua New Guinea.

Geography

The archipelago consists of the islands Moratau ( " Fergusson " ), Nidula ("Good Enough" ), Duau ( " Normanby " ) and Sanaroa as well as a number of other smaller islands which together have a land area of ​​around 3,100 km ². The highest point is 2566 m, Mount Vineuo on Goodenough Island.

The population was 63 307 for the 2000 census (including the Amphlett Islands). There are no cities, but only 137 village settlements, of which only six with more than 1,000 inhabitants. Biggest place is Kalokalo on the west coast of Fergusson, with 1,381 inhabitants ( 2000).

Management

The island group is part of the Milne Bay Province. Goodenough as a western island, with its smaller islands such as district Wagifa Kiriwina - Goodenough and forms in the Goodenough Rural LLG (Local Level Government) Area. The rest of the archipelago forms the district Esa'ala, the three LLGs (about communities ) is divided:
