Dagenham Idol

The Dagenham Idol ( also called the idol of Dagenham ) was found in a swamp in Dagenham, an eastern suburb of London near the River Thames. The approximately 2250 BC derived figure is 48.5 cm high and is made of pine. The figure has a cavity, in which presumably a phallus was used. It is one of the oldest found in England People representations. The Dagenham Idol is located in the Colchester Castle Museum.

The name Dagenham ( Daeccanham, ie "ham " = homestead Daecca ) was recorded in Anglo- Saxon times, the first time. The place is one of the first Saxon settlements in Essex.
