Daniel Chavarria

Daniel Chavarria, full name Daniel Chavarria Edmundo Batélica, ( born November 23, 1933, San José, Uruguay ) is a Uruguayan writer, translator and lecturer.

At the University of Havana Chavarria was from 1975 to 1986 professor of Latin, Greek and classical literature. In addition, he worked as a literary translator for the Instituto Cubano del Libro. Chavarria, of Havana in 1969 decided to establish his adopted country, has written numerous novels, stories and screenplays for film and television among others. Many of his books in which he has placed an emphasis on crime fiction, but among those, there are also historical novels have been translated into many other languages ​​and published, for example, in Uruguay, Germany, the USA, Brazil, Mexico, Spain, Italy, France, Greece and Russia as new editions.

Chavarria, a member of the Unión Nacional de Artistas y Escritores de Cuba ( UNEAC ), was acclaimed for his work. Several times to lent him belonged to the prices of the Cuban Ministry of the Interior ( Minint ) awarded Premio Aniversario de la Revolución, but also the price of the Uruguayan Ministry of Education and Culture or the Premio Hammett Daniell. He was honored with the Edgar Allan Poe Award in 2002. For his screenplay for the film PLAF, created in collaboration with director JCTabío, he received the 1988 Premio del Nuevo Cine Coral at the Festival Latinoamericano and the following year the Gran Premio de Largometrajes the New York Latino Festival. In 2010 he was awarded the Cuban National Prize for Literature.
