Life

Pope John Paul II appointed him January 20, 1987 Bishop of Memphis. He received his episcopal consecration Archbishop of Louisville, Thomas Cajetan Kelly OP, on 2 March of the same year; Co-consecrators were James Francis Stafford, Archbishop of Denver, and Edward Thomas O'Meara, Archbishop of Indianapolis.

On 14 July 1992 he was appointed Archbishop of Indianapolis and introduced into the office on September 9 of the same year. From his office he resigned on September 21, 2011.
