Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Louisville

The Archdiocese of Louisville (Latin: Archidioecesis Ludovicopolitana ) is a located in the United States Roman Catholic archdiocese headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky.

History

The Archdiocese of Louisville was established on April 8, 1808 by Pope Pius VII, with the Apostolic Constitution Ex debito out of territory of the Archdiocese of Baltimore as Bardstown diocese. It was the Archdiocese of Baltimore is a suffragan. The Diocese of Bardstown was on June 19, 1821 from parts of its territory to the founding of the diocese of Cincinnati. Other annexations took place on May 6, 1834 to the founding of the diocese of Vincennes and on July 28, 1837 establishing the bishopric of Nashville.

On February 13, 1841, the Diocese of Bardstown was renamed the Diocese of Louisville. The Diocese of Louisville announced on July 29, 1853 from parts of its territory to the founding of the Diocese of Covington. A further transfer of territory took place on December 9, 1937 establishing the bishopric of Owensboro.

On December 10, 1937, the Diocese of Louisville was by Pope Pius XI. charged with the Apostolic Constitution Quo christifidelium to an archbishopric. The Archdiocese of Louisville announced on January 14, 1988 from parts of its territory to the founding of the Diocese of Lexington.
