Darıca is a town and a district in the Turkish province of Kocaeli on the north shore of the Bay of İzmit in the Sea of ​​Marmara with about 146 896 inhabitants (as at end December 2010).

History

Darıca takes its name are obtained from the same castle, of which today only ruins. The town was first mentioned in Byzantine times as Tararion and was also called Toricion or in antiquity Bithyniesine.

In the 7th century BC, the region was colonized by Greeks and Phrygians. The city itself was in the Byzantine period (c. 378 BC) founded. From 1329 she was in the hands of the Ottomans.

After the Battle of Ankara in 1402 Darıca was again ceded to Byzantium, but soon reconquered by Gazi Timurtaşoğlu Umurbey. This set up a foundation to administer the conquered territories. The foundation still exists today and manages land and property in the area around Darıca.

In the turmoil of the First World War and the Turkish War of 1914-21 the city was sacked several times and finally occupied on 28 April 1921 by Greek and British troops. The foreign associations withdrew on 26 June 1921.

Economy

Agriculture plays in Darıca today only a minor role; are grown to a small extent cherries, olives and artichokes. Furthermore, even chickens and sheep is operated. Darıca is known for a special sheep yogurt. Traditionally played the mackerel fishery by the location on the Sea of ​​Marmara in Darıca always a great role, but today the conditions for decreasing fish stocks are difficult.
