Darcy Regier

Darcy John Regier ( born November 27, 1957 in Swift Current, Saskatchewan ) is a Canadian professional ice hockey player and functionary. Between 1997 and 2013 he was General Manager of the Buffalo Sabres of the National Hockey League. As a player, he completed 26 games in the NHL for the Cleveland Barons and New York Islanders as a defender.

Career

As a player

Regier began his career in 1974 at the Lethbridge Broncos of the Western Hockey League. After two seasons with the Broncos, he was selected in 1976 by the California Seals ( drafted ) and made ​​his NHL debut in the season 1977/78 at the Cleveland Barons, who had moved to California in 1976. He completed 15 games for the Barons before he was sent to the minor leagues to the Fort Worth Texans. In January 1978 he was transferred along with Wayne Merrick in exchange for Jean -Paul Parise and Jean Potvin to the New York Islanders. Until the season 1982/83 he was used exclusively in the minor leagues before he entered the ice in eleven games for the Islanders in the NHL. In 1984, he then resigned from his active playing career and joined the management of the Islanders.

As a manager and trainer

Regier has held various administrative and trainer functions in the Islanders organization before he / 92 assistant coach of the Hartford Whalers in 1991. Later, he served as assistant to the GM Don Maloney and also as interim manager after Maloney was fired during the 1995/96 season.

Regier was hired in summer 1997 as GM of the Buffalo Sabres. In his second season as GM made ​​it his Sabres to the finals for the Stanley Cup, where they lost to the Dallas Stars in six games. In the years in Buffalo, he was responsible for the draft and the development of players like Maxim Afinogenov, Henrik Tallinder, Aleš Kotalík, Ryan Miller, Paul Gaustad, Derek Roy, Jason Pominville and Thomas Vanek. He wrapped some important commitments from, such as the transfer of Chris Drury, Tim Connolly, Daniel Brière and JP Dumont, in which he always paid attention to a balanced budget.

On November 13, 2013 Regier was fired after the worst start in team history the Sabres and persistent failures of his post. He was followed by Tim Murray.
