Dasi, Taoyuan

Daxi, also Dasi (Chinese大 溪镇, Pinyin Daxi Zhen, Tongyong Pinyin Dasi Jhen, W.-G. Ta -hsi Chen ), a town (镇, zhen ) is in Taoyuan county in northwestern Taiwan.

Location

Daxi lies in the valley of the Dahan about 30 km southwest of Taipei. The city center is located on a terrace above the eastern right bank. In the east and south of the urban area rich forested foothills of Xueshan mountain range reaching heights up to 667 meters. Here is on a lake Cihu the mausoleum Chiang Kai- shek.

On the southern border to the municipality Fuxing the reservoir is Shimen. Other neighboring municipalities are Longtan and Pingzhen in the west, bathing in the north ( all belonging to the Taoyuan County ), Yingge and Sanxia in the northeast to the east (both New Taipei).

Daxi is located on Highway 3, which connects with the Taipei metropolitan West Taiwan. The town has no rail connection.

History

The valley of the Dahan was originally inhabited by members of the Atayal and Ketagalan, who called it Takoham. This name in various forms such as Dakukan, Dakekan or Daikekan Dasi kept until the early 20th century.

In the 18th century, the first Chinese settlers arrived. In the 19th century Daxi developed into an important trading center from which mainly agricultural products from the surrounding area to Taipei and Danshui were shipped. The city's development was aided by the merchant family Lin, one of the richest families in Taiwan who had fled in 1803 before hostilities to Taipei to Daxi. After the construction of the railway in 1909 further to the west extending inland navigation lost on the Dahan and thus also the trading center Daxi important.
