Garrett was born as the middle of three children of German lawyers and Geigenauktionators Georg Bongartz Paul and the American prima ballerina Dove -Marie Garrett. He received his first violin at the age of three years. First violin lessons given him by his father, who worked part-time as a violin teacher. At the age of five years, Garrett won a prize play music in the youth competition. When he was eight years old, the parents decided to let the boys appear under the name of the mother, as Garrett sounded familiar as Bongartz. At twelve he was awarded a first contract and was at the age of 13 already exclusively for Deutsche Grammophon. Together with Claudio Abbado, he played a Mozart violin concertos. As the " greatest violinists of his generation " referred to him Yehudi Menuhin. Garrett admits to have practiced eight hours every day violin. From 1990 until 1991 Garrett was taught by Zakhar Bron. From 1992 he was a student of Ida Haendel.

After graduating from the Aachen Einhard Gymnasium Garrett wrote to his parents for the sake of the Royal College of Music in nearby London, even though he wanted to go to New York. But he soon had to leave school because he never attended the lectures, and moved at age 19 to his brother, who was then living in New York and studied there. Garrett said in an interview: " I was always everything imposed. What should I play, where I was to encounter what I say in interviews and should not say "

Second career, crossover music

As his own career now manager, he came up with the concept for a crossover album, which he produced together with the London record label Decca. But the album was never released because the record company was not convinced that this would work. The breakthrough in Germany he made in 2006 with the Berlin concert organizer DE G, which relies heavily on the event nature of classical concerts and Garrett's cross-over project took over. A new image has been tailored for him, that of the violin rebels. 2014 his crossover project will continue across with a tour of Germany.
