Since the 18th century coined a group of particularly high Galerieholländer windmills the townscape of Schiedam. These mills were formerly mainly for grinding of malt for the numerous local distilleries. Of the former more than 20 Schiedam mills are now only five received. Of these, De Noord (built in 1803) with a cap height ( without wings ) of 33.3 m is the highest. The wingspan is 26.6 meters.

Since the cap of the former 38 meter high Mill De Hoop was dismantled in 1927, Breda, Noord De was the highest historic windmill world.

Beginning of the 1930s turned the mill operating. In 1937 the upper part of the mill was demolished, leaving only a stump remained. In 1955 the municipality bought Schiedam the stump to get the monument and restore. In two phases, in 1962 and 1971, the upper part was built in the old level again. The wind power drive and the grinder were restored functional.

The mill retained the status of the highest windmill in the world by the year 2006, when in the vicinity of the mill De Nolet, a wind power plant in the architectural style of a historic windmill was built.
