Decimalisation

A decimal currency is a currency in which the main unit of currency is divided by orders of magnitude in one or more subunits. Today normally is a single sub-unit, which constitutes a hundredth of the main unit.

In ancient and medieval coinage units were virtually never divided decimally. The most important vordezimale system was the Carolingian coinage. But there were some approaches to decimalization, the Roman denarius was divided into 10 aces. In Russia was already anticipated in the 16th century with a ruble to 100 kopecks, but only at the beginning of the 18th century coins were minted according to this system, and it was still the same non-decimal divisions and special name for this nominal use.

As the first country in 1792 led the United States in the decimal monetary system consistently. The U.S. dollar was at 10 Dimes (of Decimes ), divided into 100 cents and 1000 Mills. The Dime has remained as the name of the 10-cent piece, but is not used as an invoice currency. The penny, however, was the model for the hundredth classification of virtually all currencies worldwide.

The spread of decimal currency in Europe began in 1795, when France introduced the franc at 10 Decimes and 100 centimes.
