Demetris Christofias

Dimitris Christofias (Greek Δημήτρης Χριστόφιας; born August 29, 1946 in Kato Dikomo, Cyprus) is a Cypriot politician. From February 28 2008 to February 27, 2013 he was President of the Republic of Cyprus.

He was from 1989 to 2009 Secretary General of the once Marxist-Leninist and now Euro -communist Progressive Party of the Working People ( AKEL ).

Life

Christofias was born as the eldest of five children in a working-class family in 1946 in Kato Dikomo today near the Turkish-occupied harbor town of Kyrenia. Early on he was enthusiastic about a left -wing politics and joined 18 -year-old into the AKEL.
