Democratic Party (Romania)

The Partidul Democrat was a political party in Romania with social democratic and Christian social orientation. It is not to be confused with the Partidul Naţional Ţărănesc Crestin Democrat, the "historic" Christian. The party existed from 1993 to 2007.

History

Just as the Social Democrats ( Partidul Social Democrat / PSD), even the Democrats were historically produced from the old Communist Party. The overthrow of Prime Minister Petre Roman by Ion Iliescu (1991 ) led to a sustained rift between supporters of both leaders. The former founded the PD and was its first chairman. The international perception according to which PD managed to join the Socialist International as a full member also well ahead of the PSD ( 1999).

In 2000, the PD succeeded - against the general trend - a prestige success in the capital Bucharest: your candidate Traian Băsescu was mayor. After the internal party disempowerment Petre novel he followed this as a party leader. The joint candidacy of PD with the right-wing liberal PNL as "Alliance DA" in the year 2004 affected the ratio of the Socialist International to the Democrats. Băsescu, now elected after the election victory of the liberal- conservative coalition head of state, and the new party leader Emil Boc, mayor of Cluj- Napoca, operated then switching to the European Christian Democrats, ie the EPP.

In December 2007, the PD merged with the Liberal Democrat Partidul ( Liberal Democratic Party) under Theodor Stolojan to Partidul Liberal Democrat ( Democratic- Liberal Party ).
