Dénes is the Hungarian form of the Greek male given name Dionysius. Outside the linguistic territory enters the name sporadically also in the spelling Denes.

Dionysius was derived from Dionysus, the god of wine and fertility.

To spread the name of the holy Dionysius contributed, who lived as the first bishop of Paris in the 3rd century and today is a national saint of France and one of the 14 Holy Helpers.
