Monuments German musical art is a music-historical edition of historical music from Germany, from baroque to classicism.

History

The edition monuments German musical art was founded in 1892 by Philipp Spitta. From 1892 to 1931 a total of 65 published volumes. It was published by the Prussian Music Historical Commission and the following institutions under the particular direction of Rochus of Liliencron, Hermann Kretzschmar, Hermann Abert and Arnold Schering. The editorial guidelines called for a strict source fidelity and reproduction of the original score arrangement.

During the Nazi regime, the publication in 1933 justified source publication was continued The legacy of German music. Established in 1953, Music Historical Commission has taken on the task to connect to the existing tradition of German musical source publications.

The documents consist of the first episode monuments German musical art and the second episode Monuments of Music in Bavaria. A comparable number of Austrian composers are the Monuments of Music in Austria.
