Dent Island (Queensland)

, Also called Dent Iceland Hamilton West, is an inhabited island of the Whitsunday Islands, which consist of 74 islands. It is located west of Hamilton Iceland off the coast of Queensland, Australia.

Discovery

The island was discovered in 1866 by the British Royal Navy as Commander GS Nares went in search of a northern passage through the sea area of the Whitsundays Islands. Previously, the Dent Iceland was considered a part of the larger Hamilton Iceland, which lies immediately adjacent. Nares named the island after the ship's officer Albert Dent on HMS Salamander.

Tourist information

The island is frequently visited by day-trippers arriving from the nearby Hamilton Iceland. On the island is a National Park and the Hamilton Iceland Golf Club, which has been open since August 2009. The golf course has 18 holes and is the only golf course are discharged from the islands of Australia on the Championships. In 1879, the first lighthouse was built on the island in this sea area. Since 1981, the light bulb is generated by solar energy, and since 1987 there is no longer a lighthouse keeper.

More Dent Islands

Another island, called Dent Iceland, is located in Queensland on Proserpine River, which is named after the 33 tons steamer Ada Dent, who sank on June 21, 1907 before the Lady Elliot Iceland. In New Zealand, there is another island called Dent Iceland. There is a steep rocky island protruding from the sea, which is counted to the Campbell Islands in the southern Pacific Ocean. The Campbell Islands are a part of the sub-Antarctic Outlying Islands.
