Desmond O'Malley

Desmond " Des " Joseph O'Malley ( Irish: Deasún Seosamh " Des " Ó Maille; born 1 February 1939 in Limerick ) is a former Irish politician who founded the Progressive Democrats after his expulsion from the Fianna Fáil and 1985-1993 whose chairman was.

Biography

Member of Parliament and Minister of Fianna Fáil

O'Malley came from an influential political family from Limerick. Both his father Desmond O'Malley and his uncle Michael O'Malley and later the Minister Donogh O'Malley was mayor of Limerick.

He studied post-school law and was after graduation worked as a Solicitor.

His own national political career began as the candidate of Fianna Fáil with the election of deputies ( Teachta Dala ) of the lower house ( Dáil Éireann ) in a by-election ( By-election ) on 22 May 1968., Where he represented by ten subsequent re- elections until 2002 the constituency of Limerick East.

Just one year after his entry into the House he was appointed by Taoiseach (Prime Minister ) Jack Lynch 1969 parliamentary secretary to the Prime Minister and with it the parliamentary secretary to the government faction (Government Chief Whip ).

As part of a government reshuffle took place on May 7, 1970, he was appointed Minister of Justice. He held until the end of Lynch's term of office on June 18, 1973 this office.

After re- election victory of Fianna Fáil Minister Lynch appointed him on July 5, 1977 Minister of Industry and Trade in the Cabinet. In the subsequent government of Lynch's successor, Charles J. Haughey, he was on 12 December 1979 to June 30, 1981 Minister of Industry, Trade and Energy, and in addition on January 23, 1980 to June 30, 1981 Minister of Tourism.

In the second government Haughey, he was appointed from that on 9 March 1982 again appointed Minister of Trade and Tourism. He continued in this position until his resignation on October 6, 1982.

Expulsion from the Fianna Fáil and the Progressive Democrats foundation

After O'Malley, who is a fierce opponent of Haughey was since the so-called Irish Arms Crisis of 1970, 1985 was eventually expelled from the Fianna Fail because " unziemlichem behavior" when he would not support the oppositional stance of the party on the issue of contraception, he founded the Progressive Democrats and was also of 21 December 1985 to October 12, 1993 its chairman.

When it came to form a coalition government of Fianna Fáil with the Progressive Democrats after the withdrawal of Haughey from political life and the general election in 1992, O'Malley was appointed on 11 February 1992 for Industry and Commerce Minister of the new Prime Minister Albert Reynolds. However, in the following months has seen increasing tensions and disagreements between the Koalititonspartnern so that ultimately O'Malley already on November 4, 1992 resigned as Prime Minister and the coalition failed thus. Main reasons for this were accusations of dishonesty during the so-called " Beef Tribunal " ( Beef Tribunal, a tribunal created in 1991 to clarify inconsistencies in the export trade of beef, and the extent to which politicians were involved ).

Most recently, he was of 12 November 1997 to 27 March 2002 Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs.

His daughter Fiona O'Malley was also a Member of the House of Commons and is since 2007 member of the Senate ( Seanad Éireann ).
