History

With this course and it discharged the Grand Prix, the international reputation of the city should be improved. In 1982 were held with Long Beach and Las Vegas and Detroit three Formula 1 Grand Prix in the United States. The first Grand Prix in Detroit won John Watson from the 17th starting position. This was at that time the worst starting place from which each one Grand Prix was won. The following year, John Watson broke this record again, when he won 22 starting place in Long Beach.

The narrow path led to many vehicles were eliminated in the race due to accidents. In the Formula 1 race fell in every race from at least half of the starter. The Grand Prix 1984, with 20 riders who did not see the goal, a record one. Through the subsequent disqualification of a driver, this record was a few months later even broken.

From 1984 to the Trans-Am series was from a race in the framework program of the Grand Prix. This race, the Motor City 100, has been regarded as one of the most important races in Trans-Am Calendar. 1985 Detroit became the sole host a Grand Prix in the USA. The most successful driver on this track was Ayrton Senna, who won three races in a row (1986-1988) and once started from pole position ( 1985).

However, the track was with the drivers not very popular and was dropped from the 1989 Formula 1 calendar after the U.S. Grand Prix moved to Phoenix. But Detroit was now a race to the Champ Car series. In the first three years the race was held on the same route, on which also held the Formula 1 race. Emerson Fittipaldi won in 1989 and 1991 and Michael Andretti in 1990. Michael Andretti was in all three races on pole position. At the race in 1991 came unusually almost 3/4 of the grid to the finish.

The race was economically no longer viable for the city, and it moved to the 1992 season at the Raceway at Belle Isle. Until 2001 there the Champ Car races were held and, since 2007, again race the IndyCar Series.
