Devon and Somerset Railway

The Devon and Somerset Railway was a British railway company in Devon and Somerset in England.

The Company received on 29 July 1864, the concession to build a broad gauge ( 2140 mm) 68 km stretch from Norton Fitzwarren to Barnstaple. The construction was slow, so the section to Wiveliscombe and on 1 November 1873 on June 8, 1871 completed by Barnstaple. The operation took over the Bristol and Exeter Railway. In 1881 the line was converted to standard gauge.

On 31 August 1885, a connection from Barnstaple Victoria Road railway station to London and South Western Railway was approved in Barnstaple Junction Railway. This went on 1 June 1887 in operation and permitted a continuous traffic on the Barnstable and Ilfracombe Railway.
