Active reactors ( gross ):

The Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant (English Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant ) is a nuclear power plant with two Westinghouse pressurized water reactors of 1,100 megawatt class. The nuclear power plant is located in San Luis Obispo County in the U.S. state of California, on the Pacific coast between Los Angeles and San Francisco.

History

The construction of the plant began on 23 April 1968. Farms is the powerhouse of Pacific Gas and Electric. Since the nuclear power plant draws its cooling water directly from the Pacific, it was not necessary to build cooling towers.

Block 1

Unit 1 is a pressurized water reactor from Westinghouse. The reactor has a net electrical capacity of 1,122 MW and was put into operation on 11 November 1984. 2011 produced 9,917 GWh of electrical energy of the block, which corresponds to an annual utilization rate of 100.9 %.

Block 2

Block 2 is a pressurized water reactor from Westinghouse. The reactor has a net electrical capacity of 1,118 MW and was put into operation on 20 October 1985. 2011 produced 8,752 GWh of electrical energy of the block, which corresponds to an annual utilization rate of 89.4 %.

Public opposition and anti- nuclear movement

The Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant was taken despite legal challenges in operation. The company Pacific Gas and Electric had previously six years of hearings, referendums and legal action survive before the system has been approved. The main criticism was the concern about a lack of seismic safety of the nuclear power plant. At the time of start of construction in 1968 they held the seismic safety for sufficient, but at the time of its completion in 1973 it was discovered a large fissure about three kilometers from the sea. Then, the company responded by improving the structural integrity of the system. On August 7, 1977, was the first protests against the nuclear power plant with approximately 1500 participants. In August 1978, a demonstration of about 5,000 opponents of nuclear power took place, of which 487 were arrested for entry into the site. After the accident at Three Mile Iceland, Harrisburg, Penn., In March 1979, the protests intensified. In April 1979 demonstrations in San Francisco about 25 000 participants from Diablo Canyon. On June 30, 1979 finally found a large rally with about 40 000 participants in San Luis Obispo held to protest against the commissioning. Besides well-known public figures such as the singers Jackson Browne, Graham Nash and Peter Yarrow and the journalist Daniel Ellsberg and the then Governor of California, Jerry Brown joined ( since 2011 back in office ) on. He referred very clear position against nuclear energy in general and against the commissioning of Diablo Canyon in particular. The protests were organized by the california far Abalone Alliance, which maintained an office in San Louis Obispo. Finally, on 10 September 1981, was a non-violent occupation attempt. Of the approximately 30 000 supporters were arrested in 1960.
