Active reactors ( gross ):

The Point Beach nuclear power plant (English Point Beach Nuclear Generating Station, PBNP abbreviation for Point Beach Nuclear Plant ) is located near Two Rivers, 30 miles southeast of Green Bay and 18 miles north of Manitowoc, Wisconsin in the United States. About five miles north is the Kewaunee nuclear power plant.

Reactors

The reactors are two pressurized water reactors of the Westinghouse Company with two circuits. The first reactor has a net electrical output of 512 MW and a gross capacity of 543 MW. The second reactor block has a net output of 514 MW and a gross capacity of 545 MW. Currently employs around 660 full-time employees in the power plant.

History

Construction of the first block was on 19 July 1967 and the. November 6, 1970, the first reactor was first synchronized with the power grid for the second block on 25 July 1968, went on 21 December 1970 in commercial operation. The second block was first synchronized on August 2, 1972 with the electricity grid and went on October 1, 1972 in commercial operation.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission extended the operation of the power plant by an additional 20 years. Thus, the first block on October 5, 2030 to be switched off, the second block on 8 March 2033rd An environmental impact assessment concluded that there was no impact on the environment which might call for reasons of environmental protection against a renewal of the licenses. After careful inspection of the system, the security of the systems and the technical data of the employees, it was found that there are no safety concerns that militate against a license renewal, as the operator had already shown that he is capable of, the effects of aging on the power plant to cope with. There the reactor pressure vessel heads and steam generators were replaced.

From 19 June to 21 June 2007, the power plant was closed because training exercises took place in the event of a possible power plant threat.

The FPL Energy has bought in October 2007, the Point Beach nuclear power plant for about $ 998 million. The purchase price was approximately $ 783 million for the power plant itself and about $ 215 million for nuclear fuel, inventory and other items. FPL Energy thus is also responsible for probably $ 360,000,000 expensive decommissioning of the plant. FPL uses the experience from the Duane Arnold nuclear power plant.

Incidents

On 4 May 2004, the first block had to be shut down because of unexpected repairs. A nozzle in the reactor pressure vessel head had to be repaired for up to 2.5 million U.S. dollars. The reactor pressure vessel head is 150 mm thick steel cover, which covers the nuclear reactor.

On 15 January 2007 there were problems on a transformer of Unit 1 These electrical problems have been classified as an extraordinary event in the NRC at the lowest severity level. The electrical problems did not affect the power plant. Both blocks were during the incident at full power operation. The emergency diesel jumped on. The first block was shut down safely. The plant was during the event in a stable condition. There was no threat to public safety.

On April 8, 2008, there was a minor incident at the nuclear power plant. Hundreds of people were evacuated then.
