The people from the Cathedral Square is a 13-part German TV series whose production began on 29 April 1979, until 4 October 1979 104 days of filming took to complete. The script provided Leonhard Reinirkens, responsible for the production was Roland Diehm from Southwest Radio Baden- Baden under professional advice of Werner Schäfke.

Directed by Harald Schäfer, responsible for the editorial was Anton zinc; Helmer Fischer Hirseland and Mario Maylath were responsible for the extensive amenities in close consultation with Schäfke.

Introduction

The series takes place in Germany during the 13th century, in a typical town of the late Middle Ages. Riots break out one day after the bishop demanded customs duties for the Rhine ferries. In the course of the fighting, the bishop is chased out of the city and destroyed the cathedral. Now a new cathedral must be built. This work takes decades. Again and again, the inhabitants are confronted with new difficulties, not least because of marauding robber barons will make them anyway hard life of the time difficult. Due to political turmoil and a power vacuum arisen threatens the country to fall into chaos. The only solution seems to lie in a union of cities to a covenant.

The story is ostensibly of the carpenter Joseph, his family and his friend Gumpert, the weaver. As a tumult shakes the city, breaking discord from among the sons of Joseph. Norbert, it keeps with the merchants who rebel against domination of the nobility and of the bishop, while Arndt fights on the side of the bishop 's servants. In this struggle Norbert is seriously injured, can be saved and is now on for work as a carpenter no longer be used only by the help of the Jewish physician Salomon. A new bishop is used, the revolt has been victorious and now a new cathedral to be built because the old one was destroyed. This means for the resident craftsmen working for decades to come. But Josef plaguing worry: Norbert enters the merchant class, while Arndt Steinmetz wants to be. None of his sons to remain faithful to the guild of carpenters. Over the years, the situation changed rapidly. Norbert is an able and successful merchant. Around the city, however, draw on dark clouds: robber barons terrorize the land and threaten the towns and villages. In one of these insidious assaults Joseph is killed. Norbert, since risen up in the city council and mayor to politically engaged. He and his group recognize that a strong alliance ago must that provides protection for all. The only way the city can survive and the cathedral building, are enormously important, brought to an end for the deeply religious people of that time.

In 1979, the series was filmed at great expense.
