Die Özdags

The Özdags is the title of a seven -part documentary series about the daily lives of Turkish family Özdag, which was broadcast by the WDR - TV in January 2007. Directed by Ute Diehl, who had the idea for the documentary The Family Fussbroichs. Cameraman was Klaus Grittner, who was already at the Fussbroichs it. The series was nominated for the Grimme Award 2007.

A second season was 2008 on the holiday of Özdags.

The 2007 documentary shows the daily life of the family that runs a pastry shop in the Keupstraße in Cologne and now lives in the third generation in Germany. Contributors are Özdag Hasan, who first arrived in the 70s to Germany alone, his wife Aliye Özdag, the daughters Selda, Zülya and Hülya, the sons Uzay, Nebil, Aydın and Servetus and the son and grandchildren.

In each episode is particularly evident from the mean generation what it means to grow up between two cultures. So it is, for example, to differences of opinion between father Hasan, the brushing cycle for a pure holding " women's work", and his daughter Selda, which sees itself as equal woman. On another occasion Uzay rejects the (not entirely serious ) proposal to marry his sister, a young woman from Turkey, from outraged and asks what he thought a woman should that not even speak German. And Selda complains that unlike themselves, their children no decent German more learned in kindergarten, because the proportion of foreigners was too high.

How far integration can go, is particularly evident in the episode " cuddle time with Nebil Özdag ": Together with his brother Uzay he delivers the products from the patisserie. During the joint drive Nebil hears his numerous CDs with German pop music and sings absolutely sure all text songs with. Uzay, the German Schlager not like so much, it takes at first with humor, but is visibly annoyed. Nebil tried to convince him of the his opinion, mood-enhancing effect and the great significance of the hit songs. Finally Uzay thinks Nebil was " more German than the Germans ".
