Digora

Digora (Russian Дигора, Ossetian Дигорæ, pronunciation? / I ) is a city in the southern Russian republic of North Ossetia-Alania with 10,856 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is situated on the northern edge of the Greater Caucasus, in the Ossetian level about 50 km north-west of the Republic capital Vladikavkaz on Ursdon, a left tributary of the Terek.

Digora is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

The town is the terminus of a 24 km stretch of the freight terminal station Darg cooking the railway Prochladny - Vladikavkaz on the neighboring town of Ardon.

History

The village was founded in 1852 as a village Christianized Ossetians under the name wolno - Christianowski, later Nowochristianowskoje, then Christianowskoje. In 1934 it was renamed the Digora, according to one of the self- designations of the Ossetians, digoron. 1964 was the place by this name of a town.

In Digora a factory for cardboard and various companies in the food industry are located. The city is the center of an agricultural region.
