Dike Kokaral

The Kokaral Dam is a gravity dam or a dam through a narrow portion of the Aral Sea in Kazakhstan. It separates the small (north) from the large ( southern ) Aral Sea. Construction began in 2003, completed in August 2005.

Named after the dam is Kokaral Peninsula, which he connects with the opposite shore, thus dividing the northern from the southern part of the lake. Lack of money in the past the dam was built twice (1992 and 1998) of sand, but could not withstand the pent-up water. However, positive effects were already during the short time that has withstood the dam, are observed on the environment. The climate was mild, the fauna was able to partially regenerate. 2003 was restarted with the construction. As the World Bank provided funds ready, concrete could be used instead of sand this time. The dam is 13 km long and 10 m high. The overflow is located at an altitude of 42 meters above sea level.

Reason for the dam construction is the since the Stalin era declining due to increased water consumption water level of the Aral Sea and the consequent salinisation. An increase in the water level and a decrease in salinity in the northern Aral Sea recorded - In 2006 - earlier than expected. Fish stocks have again reached an economically relevant measure, so now again fish can be exported. More results are increased rain clouds and changes in the microclimate that can expect an improvement in the agricultural sector.
