Kokaral

Kokaral ( Green Island ) was until 1973 an island in Kazakhstan, in the northern part of the Aral Sea. It had an area of 273 km ² (1960) and its highest point was the 163m high Daut. On the north side the fishing villages Kokaral, Avan and Akbasty were.

Due to the silting of the Aral it was in the late sixties by growth on the west bank of the peninsula. As of 1987, the Kokaralgebiet silted so strong that even on the east side formed a land bridge and an isthmus created that divided the Aral in Nordaralsee and Südaralsee.

In 2005, the Kokaral dam was rebuilt in concrete. It prevents an outflow of salt- poor waters of the northern part to the southern part and has thus contributed to the increase of the water level, the lower the salinity and the recovery of fish stocks in the North part.
