Dikhil

Region

Dikhil (Arabic دخيل Dichīl, Diḫīl DMG ) is a city in the south of Djibouti and capital of the Dikhil region. It has about 17,000 inhabitants, among which are both members of the Issa - majority ethnic group as well as the Afar minority.

The village was built in 1928 under the French colonial power to secure the southern border of the former colonial territory of Djibouti ( French Somaliland and coast). Earlier the oasis with Dattelpalmplantagen and wells had served as a station for caravans of AWSA to Lake Assal and after Tadjoura.

In 1979, the first president of the independent Djibouti Hassan Gouled Aptidon in Dikhil the party Rassemblement Populaire pour le Progres, which has since dominated the politics of Djibouti.

Dikhil is an example of peaceful coexistence of Issa and Afar, between which the relations are strained in Djibouti. In addition to these indigenous ethnic groups live here also Ethiopian and Arab traders, who trade with Ethiopia is an important economic factor. Dikhil is connected via a paved road with Djibouti City and serves as the starting point for tourists traveling to the Lake Abbe.

It is twinned with the English Littlehampton.
