History

Construction and commissioning

The Disney Magic was the first new construction project of the shipping company at the Fincantieri shipyard in Marghera, a district of Venice. The construction of the ship with the number 5989 began in autumn 1996, with the fuselage - consisting of two separate sections - in Ancona ( Bughälfte ) and in Marghera ( rear half) was prefabricated. By combining the two units, the expansion and completion took place in Marghera. The launch took place on 12 April 1997. Problems during construction delayed the commissioning of the ship by about half a year. Upon final completion, the Disney Magic left on 1 July 1998, the yard and hit in her native Port Canaveral on 15 July 1998. She was baptized on 28 July 1998 by Patricia Disney, the former wife of Roy E. Disney and took on 30 July 1998 the cruise operation.

In several stays in dry dock shipyard in Norfolk Norshipco the Disney Magic was regularly extensively renovated and modernized.

Use

After the Disney Magic was temporarily used on the U.S. West Coast, she now runs from Port Canaveral objectives in the Caribbean. During the spring and summer months cruising the Mediterranean ( Barcelona port base ) and Northern Europe are carried out ( port base, Dover ). On 9 July 1999, the ship left for its 100th cruise.

Machinery and drive

The ship is equipped with a diesel-electric machinery. Five generator sets supply the Disney Magic with electrical energy. Each generator is coupled with a method developed by Sulzer V16 - cylinder diesel engine with an output of 11,520 kW (approx. 15,670 hp). The actual propulsion of the ship is conventionally carried out with shaft and rudder. The two General Electric propeller motors drive each one 4-blade fixed pitch propeller (diameter about 5.50 m, weight approx 18.8 tons ) to. To assist maneuvering at low speeds three transverse thrusters in the bow and two are in the rear. In order to damp rolling motions, the ship is equipped with a pair of fin stabilizers.

Design, cabins and onboard facilities

The concept of the Disney Magic and the interpretation of the cabins were very focused on the needs of families with children. The external appearance with black hull was designed based on the classic ocean liners, and attractive round shapes with large portholes and streamlined structures significantly from the appearance of other modern cruise ships. The color scheme of red, black and yellow corresponds to the colors of the Walt Disney Company. The Disney Magic is since the sixties, the first passenger ship, which is equipped with two chimneys, but the exhaust gases from the engine system only escape through the back, while the front is just a dummy and is one of the public areas. In addition to the contour of Mickey Mouse on the red chimneys located in the rear, a 4.50 m wide sculpture of Goofy, the hanging upside down painted the hull.

On the Disney Magic, there are 877 cabins in different categories. Around two- thirds of which are outside cabins, some with balconies. The size of the cabins is 17 to 28 m². All Rentals are a few exceptions with up to four passengers. Special family cabins are designed for five passengers. On deck 8, the 22 luxuriously appointed suites, on living space of between 57-88 m ("1 - Bedroom" - and "2 Bedroom suite " ) are offering up to seven people. Particularly noteworthy are the two " Royal Suites " ( " Walter E. Disney Suite " and " Roy O. Disney Suite") with an area of about 95 m². For passengers with physical disabilities are 16 cabins available. Depending on the specific features of the ship are accommodation facilities for over 3,600 passengers present (the " Complete Guide to Cruising & Cruise Ships" mentioned in 2006, more than 3,325 passengers).

The interior combines style elements of Art Deco with typical Disney themes and characters. In the three-story, richly decorated atrium is an approximately 1.80 m large bronze sculpture, depicting Mickey Mouse as a helmet diver. The chandelier was designed by the artist Dale Chihuly. The design of the public areas reminiscent of the Radio City Music Hall in New York City. The main theater spans three decks and can accommodate 1,000 spectators. Unlike many other cruise ships, there are on board but no casino.
