Dolný Kubín District

The Okres Dolny Kubin is an administrative unit in the north of Slovakia with 39 487 inhabitants ( 31 December 2011) and an area of 490 km ² within the Žilinský. Clockwise, it borders the following Okresy: Námestovo in the north, Tvrdošín in the east, Liptovsky Mikulas in the southeast, Ružomberok in the south, in southwestern Martin, Žilina in the west and Čadca the northwest, all kraj in Žilinský.

Geography and transport

The Okres is part of the traditional landscape Orava ( German Arwa ) and is about 130 km ² smaller than an "average " Okres. It extends along the lower reaches of the river Orava, which flows into the Waag in the extreme southwest. The river has an average discharge rate of 34.5 m³ / s at Dierová and its longest tributary is the 21 km long Zázrivá which opens into Párnica in the Orava. The valley is surrounded by numerous mountains, as Orava Magura in the north, Skorušinské Hills in the east, Chočské Hills in the south and Greater and Lesser Fatra in the West. All these mountains are part of the Outer Western Carpathians. Overall, the Okres has the character of a mountain country, in the upper parts of the highlands in the low-lying parts. One of the highest elevations of the Velky Choc part ( 1611 m nm) Hills in the Chočské and Minčol ( 1394 m nm) in the Orava Magura. The lowest point (435 m nm) in Kraľovany.

The most important streets is the state road 59 ( E 77 ), which runs from Ružomberok across Dolny Kubin and on to Poland via Tvrdošín and the state road 70 represents the connection to the west, where they in Kraľovany in the east-west state road 18 (E 50 ) opens. The network is supplemented by the State Road 78, a compound of Orava Podzámok after Námestovo and on to Poland and the country road 583 that leads to Zázrivá and continue to Zilina. From the primary road network, a section of the highway has been completed to R3 Orava Podzámok so far. By Okres the single-track railway line Kraľovany - Sucha Hora, which copies the course of the Orava, with stations in Párnica, Dolny Kubin, Medzibrodie nad Oravou and Orava Podzámok runs. In Kraľovany is connected to the electrified double-track railway line and Žilina - Košice.

Historical administrative units

Historically, the district is almost entirely in the former county Arwa, a small part in the extreme southwest along the River Vah ( outskirts of Kraľovany ) is part of the former county Liptau (see also List of historic counties of Hungary ). There was a chair district called Alsókubin, but without the outskirts of Orava Podzámok, who was an independent chair district. A Okres called Dolny Kubin was made ​​in 1923 and was identical with the exception of the community Valaská Dubová with today. This was 1923-28 for the management unit Považska župa ( waager County ) and 1928-39 to the Slovak country. In the time of the First Slovak Republic was the Okres part of Tatranská župa ( Tatra County ). In the administrative structure of the restored Czechoslovakia he belonged first to the 1949-60 Žilinský ( not to be confused with today ), now without the community Valaská Dubová. He was, in the years 1960-1990 part of the enlarged Okres Dolny Kubin, within the Stredoslovenský kraj (Central Slovakian Regional Association ), which covered virtually the Slovak part of the historic landscape Orava. Today Okres was established in the newly independent Slovakia in 1996 under the new management structure and allocated to Region Žilinský.

Population

Also of population forth the Okres is sparsely populated in comparison with the Slovak average. The only town is Dolny Kubin ( 19,554 inhabitants) and with Zázrivá ( 2720 inhabitants) there is only one municipality over 2,000 inhabitants.
