Domenico Jacobini

Domenico Maria Jacobini ( born September 3, 1837 in Rome, † February 1, 1900 ibid ) was Cardinal and diplomat of the Holy See.

Life

Jacobini received the Sacrament of Confirmation on March 9, 1845. He attended the Pontifical Roman Seminary, where he doctorate in philosophy (10 September 1856), in theology (12 September 1860) and both rights (June 28, 1863) acquired.

After his ordination he was on November 28, 1866 an official of the Congregation de Propaganda Fide. Later he became professor of Greek (21 August 1868) and prefect of studies (19 November 1880) at the Pontifical Roman Seminary and on June 1, 1874 Substitute of the Secretariat of the Apostolic Briefs. Jacobini was raised Holiness to the rank of Prelate of His House on August 2, 1877, and received on September 19, 1879, the Office of the Secretary of the Congregation for Extraordinary Ecclesiastical Affairs. As secretary he essentially served as chief of this Congregation, as the Pope only nominally held the title of prefect.

He became a canon of St. Peter's, after he had been appointed on 16 November 1880 Deputy Librarian of the Holy Roman Church. Two days later he was also prefect of studies of the Pontifical Athenaeum San Apollinare.

The Pope appointed him on August 4, 1881 Titular Archbishop of Tyre. The Archpriest of St. Peter's Basilica, Cardinal Borromeo Edoardo, donated to him on 14 August of the same year at the Cathedra Petri episcopal ordination; Were co-consecrators Alessandro Sanminiatelli Zabarella, Almoner of His Holiness, and Francesco Folicaldi, canon of St. Peter's. On 8 June 1886 he was appointed to the Pontifical throne assistant and on June 16, 1891 Apostolic Nuncio in Portugal.

Leo XIII. took him on 22 June 1896 as cardinal priest in the Sacred College, and he received on 3 December of the same year the titular church of Santi Marcellino e Pietro. After lying in state in the Basilica Santi Apostoli, his body was buried in the grave of his family at the cemetery Campo Verano.
