Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples

The Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples (Latin: Congregation per Gentium Evangelization Tione ) is a central authority of the Vatican and coordinates the missionary activity of the Catholic Church.

History

The institution dates back to the Congregation de Propaganda Fide (Eng. about the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith ) by Pope Gregory XV. Was mainly founded in 1622 with the aim to counteract the loss of influence by the spreading Protestantism. After the end of the Thirty Years' War offered in Europe with the newly manufactured balance of the two Christian churches, although only very limited opportunities for proselytizing, but opened the discoveries in America, Africa and Asia, a wide field of activity for Catholic missionaries.

The study commissioned by Pope Paul VI. 1967 carried out reform of the Curia, it received its present name.

Structure

The Congregation is divided into four themed commissions.

Furthermore, the Pontifical Urban University belongs to the Congregation. It is dedicated to focus on the mission training of priests. The own printing " Polyglotta " takes care of the production of missionary writings in the languages ​​of nations to missionary.

The Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples is characterized as part of the Committee for the Pontifical Mission Societies also responsible for the management and coordination of the four Pontifical Mission Societies Pontifical Propagation of the Faith, work of the Holy Apostle Peter, Children's Mission and Missionary Union. This committee are Cardinal Dias as president and the archbishops and Sarah Vacchelli ago as vice president. The focus is on the promotion of awareness for World Mission and Church as well as the financial security of the mission.

On September 21, 2013, the entire leadership of the Congregation by Pope Francis was confirmed permanently in office.
