Domenico Maria Novara da Ferrara

Domenico Maria Novara da (also Domenico Maria Novara da or Ploti Ferrariensis; born July 29 or August 1, 1454 in Ferrara, † August 15 or August 18, 1504 in Bologna) was a mathematician, astronomer and astrologer; since 1483 he was a professor at the University of Bologna.

Life and work

Domenico Maria Novara da described himself as a pupil of Regiomontanus, who had taught mathematics and astronomy in Vienna. At the beginning of 16th century astronomy and astrology were not clearly separated. Novara saw himself as someone who created the mathematical basis for personal and political prognostication by precise observation.

He was considered an excellent observer; he had doubts about the former Ptolemaic geocentric system, such asides show in books. He should have sent his gifted students in the study of the teachings of Regiomontanus and Georg von Peuerbach These doubts. The two authors had a detailed commentary on the Almagest of Claudius Ptolemy written, which was reissued in 1496 in Venice.

Domenico Maria Novara da regarded as a teacher and mentor of Nicolaus Copernicus. According to Copernicus ' De revolutionibus orbium Coelestium both watched together on March 9, 1497 an occultation of the star Aldebaran by the moon and on January 9, 1500 and on March 4, 1500 a conjunction of Saturn with the moon.
