Dopamine beta hydroxylase

At dopamine beta- hydroxylase ( DBH) is the enzyme that catalyzes the oxidation of dopamine to noradrenaline. This is the last step in the biosynthesis of the hormone and neurotransmitter norepinephrine. DBH was found only in mammals, where it is mainly localized in the adrenal glands and in the nervous system. Mutations in the human DBH gene can lead to dopamine - β - hydroxylase deficiency.

Mice lacking DBH show no addictive behavior with certain drugs, but have unchanged appetite.

Catalyzed reaction

Ascorbate O2 → H2O dehydroascorbate

Dopamine is hydroxylated to norepinephrine. DBH occurs in a cytosolic and membrane isoform. The age, the activity of the enzyme is increased.
