Drăgășani
Drăgăşani is a city in Vâlcea county, in the region of Wallachia, Romania.
Location
Drăgăşani lies in the west of the Wallachian Plain in the river plain of the Olt and is surrounded by some foothills of the Southern Carpathians. The district capital Râmnicu Vâlcea is located about 50 km north.
History
The territory of the present-day city was already inhabited in the Palaeolithic and the Neolithic. Drăgăşani was first documented in 1535. 1772 mentioned a market and a crossing of the Olt. On June 19, 1821 came in near the resort to a battle between the troops of Alexander Ypsilanti ' and Ottoman units; it was one of the first fighting of the Greek Revolution.
1995 got the status of a municipium Drăgăşani - ie a more important city - awarded.
The city lived a long time on agriculture, mainly by vineyards. After 1970, some industries (including a shoe factory ) were settled.
Population
1912 were registered in Drăgăşani 6,710 residents. By 1992, the population grew to 22,126; since then a decrease. As of the 2002 census, 20,798 residents were registered in the city, including 20,571 Romanians, 199 Roma, Hungary 6 and 2 German.
Traffic
Drăgăşani is on the running in the valley of the Olt railway line between Piatra Olt and Râmnicu Vâlcea. Along these lines, a quick service and commuter trains several times a day. Regular bus services and more for Râmnicu Vâlcea and Bucharest. Drăgăşani is located on the National Road 64 from Caracal after Râmnicu Vâlcea.
