Dramatic soprano

The dramatic soprano is a type of soprano. The voice often has a metallic timbre and the greatest impact. Of all the dramatic soprano sopranos must outshine the loudest orchestral sounds and sing great arches. The voice is usually used for heroines roles in dramatic / tragic operas. As a verbal increase the term "high dramatic soprano " is sometimes used (especially for the late Wagner operas), for singers like Marie Wilt, Kirsten Flagstad, Frida Leider, Astrid Varnay, Birgit Nilsson, Leonie Rysanek, Hildegard Behrens, Gwyneth Jones and Nina Stemme. The term "high " is not referred to here, however, the Tessitura dramatic roles that ( especially when Isolde and Brünnhilde in Götterdämmerung ) is lower than, for example, requires in lyric soprano roles and a higher penetration power in the central position.

Examples of the vocal category are:

  • Ludwig van Beethoven, Fidelio: Leonore
  • Richard Wagner: Tristan and Isolde: Isolde
  • The Valkyrie: Sieglinde, Brünnhilde
  • Siegfried Brünnhilde
  • Götterdämmerung: Brünnhilde
