Düsseldorf–Elberfeld railway

The railway line Dusseldorf -Elberfeld is the 27 km long main line of the Dusseldorf - Elberfeld Railway Company of Dusseldorf on Erkrath, Hochdahl and Vohwinkel to Elberfeld, now Wuppertal.

History

The railway line Dusseldorf -Elberfeld was built in the years 1838-1841 from the Dusseldorf - Elberfeld Railway Company founded for just this purpose.

After the takeover by the Bergisch- Märkische Railway Company in 1857 this increased the distance to 1865 from throughout twofold.

Realignment in Dusseldorf

Inaugurated on October 1, 1891 Düsseldorf Central Station replaced the Stations of the three recently nationalized, formerly ( nominally ) private railway companies.

The new route runs from the train station towards the north along the existing route of the main line of the Cologne -Minden Railway Company to the branching point Wehrhahnlinie CME. There it turns east and follows the route of the Düsseldorf Talbahn the Rheinische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft. East of the intersection with the railway line Troisdorf- Mülheim- Speldorf she meets then back to the original route.

The Düsseldorf Valley Railway waved at this very spot to the northeast and went over Gerresheim RhE to Mettmann, even this route was abandoned in 1891 and, instead, about Gerresheim BME out.

Steep ramp Erkrath - Hochdahl

The main difficulty in the construction of the route presented to overcome the slope between Erkrath and Hochdahl dar.

Due to the high pitch ( 33.3 ‰) was this section for a long time be overcome only with the help of a cable pulley system, initially driven by a stationary steam engine, a little later then. Due to a downhill driving locomotive on a specially built, additional track

From 1865, after the doubling of the track until 1963 for the electrification of the steep ramp was even three tracks. 1985, a third track was built because of the planned S-Bahn operation again in 1988 then the main track towards Wuppertal the newly built suburban railway route has been assigned.

As of 1926, the cables worked with additional biasing or Schubloks in place.

Current importance

The track is of central importance for the connection of the city of Wuppertal in the regional and long-distance traffic. To run all EC/IC- and ICE connections to the city by the section between Wuppertal Hbf and branch Gruiten (from there via the railway line Gruiten -Cologne- Deutz ), as well as the regional express Rhine -Münster -Express ( RE 7 ) and the Regional Bahn Rhein - Wupper -Bahn (RB 48).

Between the branching point Gruiten ( Abzw ) and the train Dusseldorf Gerresheim where the Wuppertal Nord railway threading at the same level, the mainline route is single track. This single-track section (as well as the entire distance ) ride the trains, regional transport lines Wupper -Express ( RE 4 ) and Maas- Wupper -Express ( RE 13). Also on complete length of the inverted S -Bahn line S 8, but on the full two-track parallel S- Bahn line.

The S -Bahn line S 9 branches of Wuppertal Hbf coming in Wuppertal- Vohwinkel train station on the railway line for food. In addition, S 68 between Wuppertal- Vohwinkel and Langenfeld ( Rheinland) come at rush hour trains on the amplifier used, which run to Dusseldorf main station only in the load direction.
