Earl of Essex

Earl of Essex is a British hereditary title of nobility in the Peerage of England, which has been held by several families, but also individuals since about 1139, of which the most famous Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex ( 1566-1601 ) is.

The earldom was first created in the 12th century for Geoffrey de Mandeville. After the death of the third Earl went out of the title, but was reassigned in 1199 to Geoffrey Fitzpeter, who had married a relative of Mandeville. With the death of his sons the title became extinct again.

The third award went Humphrey de Bohun 1239, 2nd Earl of Hereford, whose father Henry de Bohun Maud, a sister of the last Earl had married. Both titles extinct 1373 again.

The best known is the appointment of Robert Devereux, 1572, the following from the year 1661, the last date.

With the death of the ninth Earl in 1981 entered an ambiguous situation that could be resolved only in 1989, there was initially not clear who was heir apparent.

The other titles of the Earls of Essex are: Viscount Malden, Malden in the County of Essex of (awarded 1661), and Baron Capell of Hadham in the County of Hertford (awarded 1641). The title Viscount Malden is led by the heirs title as a courtesy title.
