Earl of Oxford

Earl of Oxford is one of the oldest British peerage. He was for many centuries in the possession of the de Vere family.

Their first headquarters was Castle Hedingham, Essex, but they had extensive land holdings particularly in the east of England. Ancestral home of the family is The Manor House in Frome, Somerset.

Ceremonies

The first ceremony took place in 1142 in the Peerage of England. The dignity died in 1703 with the death of the 20th Earl of. The most famous was probably Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford, as was partly suspected that he was the actual author of the works of William Shakespeare. The Earls of Oxford were to the death of the 18th Earl in 1625, hereditary holders of the office of Lord Great Chamberlain.

The title of Earl of Oxford and Mortimer was awarded in the Peerage of Great Britain in 1711 to Robert Harley.

The title of Earl of Oxford and Asquith was awarded in the Peerage of the United Kingdom in 1925 to the former Prime Minister Herbert Henry Asquith.
