Ebbo Gospels

The Ebo Gospels is on behalf of Archbishop Ebo of Rheims ( 778-851 ) produced Carolingian illuminated manuscript of considerable artistic value. The Gospel Book is now the northern French town of Epernay preserved in the City Library ( Bibliothèque Municipale ) under the signature Ms. 1. It begins with a poem on the client, the Archbishop Ebo.

The Gospel Book was created around 825 in either Reims or gathered for this purpose in the Benedictine monastery of Villers skin at Epernay artists, where at the same time also the Utrecht Psalter was produced. This includes one from the fact that portraits of the Evangelists the illumination of the Utrecht Psalter are extremely similar in style and execution in the Ebo - gospel. Both are among the masterpieces of book art of the Carolingian Renaissance and form the major works of the so-called school of Reims.
