Ebenezer Sage

Ebenezer Sage ( born August 16, 1755 in Chatham (now Portland ), Connecticut; † January 20, 1834 in Sag Harbor, New York) was an American physician and politician. Between 1809 and 1815, and 1819-1820 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Ebenezer Sage grew up during the British colonial period. Initially taught by a tutor, then he graduated in 1778 at Yale College. Sage studied medicine and opened in 1784 in East Hampton his first practice. After moving to Sag Harbor in 1801 was followed by a second. Politically, he was a member of the founded by Thomas Jefferson Democratic- Republican Party. In the congressional elections of 1808 Sage was the first electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Samuel Riker on March 4, 1809. After two successful re- election to the U.S. House of Representatives, he opted not to run again and was eliminated after March 3, 1815 from the Congress of. During his time in the U.S. House of Representatives he kept a lively correspondence with a number of friends and acquaintances. Many of his philosophical letters have been preserved and serve as a contemporary source for the events during the War of 1812 in Washington DC and on Long Iceland. After the end of his term he resumed his work as a doctor again. In the congressional elections of 1818 Sage was re-elected again in the first electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he became the successor of George Townsend on March 4, 1819. However, his choice of James Guyon junior on January 14, 1820, successfully challenged on the basis of incorrect registration for choice. Then he resumed his activities as a doctor. His last political appearance took place in the following year as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention of New York. Sage died on January 20, 1834 in Sag Harbor and was then buried in the Old Burying Ground. His body was later reburied in the Oakland Cemetery.
