Echinopsis chamaecereus

Echinopsis Chamaecereus

Echinopsis Chamaecereus is a cactus species in the genus Echinopsis. It comes in the Andean Northwest of Argentina in the province of Tucumán before. This type is also known under the synonyms silvestrii Chamaecereus and Lobivia known silvestrii. In English it is known for its many small side shoots as " Peanut Cactus".

Description

Echinopsis Chamaecereus forms by numerous side shoots dense turf of low -lying, finger-like stems of bright green color, which carry numerous areoles with 10 to 15 white thorns of 1 to 1.5 mm in length from eight to ten ribs. In strong sunlight, the shoots can color purple.

The hermaphroditic, funnel-shaped flowers are radial symmetry and have a diameter of about four centimeters. The vivid vermilion colored bracts are numerous. Also numerous stamens and a yellow pen is available in each flower. The flowers appear in culture from May to July on the side of the shoots. It evolve turbid red, 7 mm long fruits that contain small black seeds.

As an ornamental plant, the yellow mutant Echinopsis Chamaecereus f lutea has a greater significance than the wild species. It lacks the necessary for photosynthesis green chlorophyll, and therefore they must be grafted onto another cactus, in order to survive. The rootstock is taking over their photosynthesis and its roots the diet of Pfröpflings. In the trade are mostly Propfungen with a Hylocereus species as an underlay available.

Systematics and hazard

This species was described in 1905 by Carlos Luis silvestrii Spegazzini in Cactacearum Platensium Tentamen in honor of Philip Silvestri ( 1873-1949 ) as Cereus. Nathaniel Lord Britton arranged in 1922 and Joseph Nelson Rose to them III the new monotypic genus Chamaecereus silvestrii as Chamaecereus in The Cactaceae. The genus Chamaecereus was incorporated by Gordon Douglas Rowley in the genus Lobivia, which in turn merged into the genus Echinopsis. Since the nature of Echinopsis silvestrii already existed, Heimo Friedrich and Wolfgang Glätzle chose the name Echinopsis Chamaecereus.

From Echinopsis Chamaecereus are numerous hybrids with other Echinopsis species that have fewer but thicker shoots, which are not so easily broken. The flowers of these hybrids vary greatly in shape and color.

In the Red List of Threatened Species IUCN is the species as "Data Deficient ( DD)", ie out with no sufficient data.
