EdineÈ› District

The Raion is a raion in Moldova Edineţ. The Rajonshauptstadt is Edineţ.

Geography

The Rajon is in the northwest of the country on the border with Romania along the river Prut. The neighboring districts are Briceni, Donduşeni Ocniţa and Rîşcani.

Besides the capital city Cupcini has the right to the remaining area of the Rajons is distributed to rural communities. In Rajon Edineţ located with the Emil Racoviţă Cave one of the largest caves in the world. Named after the Romanian cavers Emil Racoviţă cave was discovered in an explosion in a gypsum quarry near the village Criva 1959. It has an extensive system of underground tunnels and has several underground lakes.

History

The Rajon Edineţ has existed since 2003. Until February 2003, the area belonged to the larger and now defunct county Edineţ ( Judeţul Edineţ ).
