Edward Bernard Raczyński

Edward Bernard Maria Graf Raczyński ( born December 19, 1891 in Zakopane, † July 30, 1993 in London) was a Polish diplomat and politician.

Life

He was the son of Count Edward Alexander Raczyński and his wife Rose ( Róża ) née Countess Potocki and came from one of the oldest noble families of Great Poland, ( Raczyński ) that on February 1, 1824 by Frederick William III. was elevated to the hereditary title of Count of Prussia and the most beautiful castle in the province of Posen ( Rogalin ) had with priceless art collections. Raczynski studied at universities in Krakow, Leipzig, London, and in 1919 entered the service of the Polish Foreign Ministry. 1932 to 1934 he was a Polish envoy to the League of Nations in Geneva and later to 1941, ambassador in London, after which he was following the resignation of August Zaleski to 1943, Foreign Minister of the Polish government in exile in London.

Long years in the circles of the Polish emigrants in executive functions (including on the tripartite ), he was finally in 1979 President of Poland in exile and held that post until 1986. He was the last president in exile, who had held a high position already during the 2nd Republic. His two successors - Sabbath and Kaczorowski - were 26 or 20 years old when the Second World War began.

Raczynski was also active as a translator of Persian poetry into Polish and gave his 1960 transfer of Omar Khayyam Rubayat out. He was married three times: 1926 with Joyous Markham, heir of a British " steel barons " family, who died early in 1932 with the Polish nobles Cecylia Jaroszynska († around 1962 ), who bore him three daughters and 1991, that is 100 years old, with Aniela Lilpop, who came from the well-known Warsaw family of industrialists. By this marriage he legalized a long association.

As the last descendant of his family died Earl Edward Raczyński in 1993 at the age of 101 years in London and got after the transfer of his body to Poland a state funeral in the crypt of his family to Rogalin. Rogalin he had bequeathed to the Polish people.
