Edward Bridges, 1st Baron Bridges

Ettingdene Edward Bridges, 1st Baron Bridges KG, GCB, GCVO, PC, MC ( * August 4, 1892 in Yattendon, West Berkshire, † 27 August 1969 Winterfold Heath, Surrey ) was a British politician and civil servant.

Life and career

Bridges was the son of Robert Bridges and Mary Monica Waterhouse, daughter of the architect Alfred Waterhouse. He attended Eton College and then studied at Magdalen College, University of Oxford. Bridges fought in the First World War in the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, reached there the rank of Captain and was awarded the Military Cross.

Later, he joined the civil service and in 1938 was appointed Kabinnettssekretär, in place of Sir Maurice Hankey. Bridges held this post until 1946, he was a tenured Secretary of the Treasury (Permanent Secretary to the Treasury), until he retired in 1956. In 1953 he was appointed Privy Counsellor and 1957 to the peer as Baron Bridges, of Headley in the County of Surrey and of Saint Nicholas at Wade in the County of Kent. In 1965, he was also a Knight of the Garter.

After he retired, he became Chancellor of the University of Reading. He received honorary degrees from several universities and was appointed a member of the Royal Society.

His heir was his eldest son, Thomas Bridges, 2nd Baron Bridges, a prominent diplomat.

Family

Bridges married Katharine Dianthe Farrer, daughter of Thomas Farrer, 2nd Baron Farrer, on June 6, 1922 They had four children, two sons and two daughters.:
