Edwin Frederick O'Brien

Edwin Frederick O'Brien Cardinal OESSH ( born April 8, 1939 in New York) is an American Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. He is a Grand Master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy grave in Jerusalem.

Life

Education and employment

Edwin O'Brien was born in the Bronx, where he attended several schools in Catholic-run. After leaving school he studied Catholic theology and philosophy at the Archbishop's Seminary of St. Joseph in Dunwoodie ( Yonkers ). On 29 May 1965 he received by Francis Cardinal Spellman, the sacrament of Holy Orders.

Subsequently, he was chaplain to the Most Holy Trinity Parish and civil chaplain of the United States Military Academy at West Point. In 1976 he was chaplain at Saint Patrick's Cathedral in New York and Vice-Chancellor of the Archdiocese. Archbishop of Baltimore

Pope Benedict XVI. O'Brien convened on 12 July 2007 as Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Baltimore. The solemn inauguration Archbishop Pietro Sambi by the Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, took place on 1 October of the same year. On June 29, 2008 ( Peter and Paul ), he received the pallium in Rome.
