Eglingen

Eglingen is a commune of 360 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Haut-Rhin in the Alsace region. It belongs to the Communauté de communes Local Government Association de la Porte d'Alsace.

Geography

In the north of Eglingen the Canal du Rhone au Rhin (Rhine - Rhône Canal ) runs, the south is a forest and around the village core is mainly farmland. The Largue flows through the town which is 15 kilometers south-west of Mulhouse.

History

Eglingen was destroyed in the Thirty Years' War (1635-1648) by the Swedes and populated by Swiss settlers again.

During the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte ( * 1769 † 1821) of the Rhone-Rhine Canal was expanded in the community of Spanish forced labor.

In the First World War (1914-1918) was Eglingen again destroyed and then rebuilt.

Attractions

1302 a church in Eglingen was mentioned in a document. This building was in 1772 declared dilapidated. 1777 a new nave was built. Before the First World War, a bell tower was built. The church of Saint -Léger was destroyed in the First World War, with the exception of the Gothic sacristy, which dates from the 14th century. The building was built in 1927.

Another attraction represents a draw-well, which was faithfully restored in 2000.

Economy

Major lines of business in Eglingen are farming, fruit growing and breeding of domestic cattle and hogs.
